PRA Group Partners with CHKD to Support Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore’s BackPack Program

NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 4, 2024 – A team of PRA Group volunteers recently visited the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia & the Eastern Shore to pack bags for their BackPack Program, which provides nutritious, easy-to-prepare meals to children who may not have access to adequate meals during weekends and school breaks. The bags for this volunteer shift are to be delivered to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters’ General Academic Pediatrics office, where they will be distributed to children and families with ongoing needs that go beyond what a hospital typically provides.

Colleagues spent the afternoon assembling each bag piece by piece, and by the end of their shift, they had packed more than 450 backpacks. The bags also included notes to help recipients find additional resources to combat food insecurity. The Foodbank serves an area of 4,745 square-miles, making volunteer help a vital resource.

“PRA Group has been a longtime supporter of the Foodbank when it comes to volunteering as well as financial support,” said the Foodbank’s Volunteer Coordinator Jeremy Rodden. “PRA Group has donated more than $700,000 over the course of our relationship but they also show up as well. We’ve had more than 130 different employees from PRA Group come in and volunteer with us, contributing a total of 1,100-plus hours of labor. It’s a partnership that goes beyond just philanthropy, they’re willing to volunteer their time and help us with our program.”

In addition to supporting CHKD, the BackPack program supports more than 60 schools across the Coastal Virginia and Eastern Shore regions. Last year, the nonprofit distributed 68,800 bags. The Foodbank’s day-to-day operations rely heavily on help from volunteers, with nearly 7,000 members of the Hampton Roads community making up its base and taking on a variety of roles, from stocking shelves in the warehouse to dropping food off in the Foodbank’s fleet of delivery vehicles.
