PRA Group Partners with United Way for School Lunch Debt Drive

Employees raise over $2,000 for students in Virginia Beach Public Schools

NORFOLK, Va. Sep. 5, 2024 – Proper nutrition is crucial to the health and wellness of growing children. That’s why access to healthy meals at school is so important. School meals provide nutrition that is essential to boosting optimal brain function, giving everyone the best opportunity possible to learn and succeed. However, not all families are able to afford school lunches, even with the presence of free or reduced lunch programs. According to the Education Data Initiative, more than 30.4 million students in the U.S. are unable to afford their school meals, with the national debt totaling more than $262 million.

Throughout the month of August, PRA Group employees tackled this issue by partnering with United Way of South Hampton Roads (UWSHR) to initiate an inaugural donation drive dedicated to paying down school lunch debt. This drive benefits students learning in all 70 of Virginia Beach’s public schools.

Employees distributed a link where colleagues from across the U.S. could contribute to the drive. Over 50 PRA Group colleagues raised $2,235, which was then donated to UWSHR’s United for Children program. The program provides support to children living in the area surrounding PRA Group’s global headquarters in Norfolk, Va. and distributes the money according to the need in the school district. United for Children works with more than 200 community partners to serve the 21,000+ children living below the poverty line in the South Hampton Roads area.

This nationwide donation drive is another example of PRA Group’s commitment to the community. Earlier this year, PRA Group employees visited senior care facilities near each of our sites to distribute Valentine’s Day cards and gifts. Read more about PRA Group’s community impact here.
