PRA Group’s Black Excellence ERG Addresses World Hunger Day with Volunteerism at Food Banks Across the U.S.

NORFOLK, Va., June 17, 2024 More than 44 million people in the US struggle with food insecurity according to Feeding America., To address this critical issue — starting in the communities in which we live and work — over 60 colleagues involved in PRA Group’s recently formed Black Excellence Employee Resource Group (ERG) joined in volunteer opportunities at their local food banks across the U.S. over the past month.

At PRA Group’s headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, a team of volunteers joined the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore to pack food boxes that include ingredients for simple, healthy meals, which the Foodbank was able to distribute throughout the week. The Foodbank, of which PRA Group is a longtime supporter, has served the Coastal Virginia area since 1981, reaching a community of over 98,000 people facing food insecurity.

“It was great to spend a day out of the office doing something good, and even better to know that colleagues at so many of our sites were out doing the same,” said PRA Group National Managing Attorney Zulema Green, an executive co-sponsor of the Black Excellence ERG. “Knowing how many families this food bank serves, it is incredible to think about how many people food banks help. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to their immediate impact this month.”

PRA Group’s office in Jackson, Tennessee, spent an afternoon volunteering at the Regional Inter-Faith Association (RIFA). PRA Group’s volunteers worked in the warehouse stocking food and distributed easy-to-prepare, nutritious meals to schoolchildren who lack access to food over the weekend. RIFA donated 611,405 meals and 328,507 pounds of food to those in need in 2023—an impact made possible through volunteer support.

“Part of building a meaningful community within our organization is reflecting on the challenges our local communities face and addressing them head on—especially those that often go unnoticed,” said PRA Group Global Controller Neal Petrovich, a co-sponsor of the Black Excellence ERG. “Being able to raise awareness among our members while also working directly to drive change by helping others was a great honor.”

These are just a few examples of the volunteer efforts the ERG undertook surrounding World Hunger Day. The nationwide food bank volunteer effort was the Black Excellence ERG’s second successful nonprofit-driven initiative this year, as this past January the ERG collected over 100 books to donate to WHRO’s literacy programming in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
