Building Strong Foundations for Communicating DEI
PRA Group’s Giovanna Genard recently spoke during one of James Madison University (JMU)’s faculty “Learning Circles” about effectively communicating topics central to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) with broad audiences. A seasoned marketing executive, Genard’s presentation provided perspective on the importance personal brand-building can bring to establishing trust and impactful conversations.
“When communicating on topics related to DEI, it is critical to ask what nuance and value you can bring to the conversation. What differentiates your work compared with that of others in the field? Whether delivering a keynote or posting on your own social media channels, thoughtfulness and self-awareness are essential to establishing trust with your audiences,” said Genard.
“Consistency is another key factor,” Genard added. “Building relationships with followers, members of the media or any other stakeholder groups takes time, research and sincere effort. You need to first understand—and help others understand—the connection between your work and its impact on the community. As you network and grow your own reputation in the field, you will begin to widen your audience and reach more people. This is where you can begin to see real impact.”
Genard also addressed the power of using data and automation to inform when and how an organization may choose to engage with a particular topic in the way that is most meaningful to its audience(s).
She reiterated that an individual could play a powerful role in fostering an inclusive culture and helping prospective students, employees and others in their organization feel welcome.
Genard drew upon decades of experience in higher education as well as insights from PRA Group’s diversity and inclusion program to inform the virtual dialogue.
